Nokia Lumia 710 is the first Windows Phone from Nokia in the U.S., and it has been long anticipated since Microsoft Corp. and Nokia signed a partnership deal to have Nokia adopt Windows Phone as its “primary smartphone operating system” in a bid to stay competitive in the mobile industry.

The deal could be a big one for Bellevue-based T-Mobile, which is the only major wireless carrier without an iPhone in its lineup and faces increasing opposition to its proposed $39 billion merger with AT&T.

The Lumia — which has caught some attention not only as the second coming of Nokia, but for the unfortunate coincidence of its name translating as "prostitute" in Spanish — will give first-timers (and more experienced users) a 4G experience at an entry level price of $49 (after a $50 mail-in rebate, with a two-year commitment to the carrier). Unlimited family value plans (which include calls, texts and data) start at about $50.

"Our strategic mission is to bring 4G data and smartphones to mass of 150 million people who have yet to upgrade to a smartphone," said T-Mobile senior product manager Rhone Rarick, in an interview earlier today.

"We've seen from research, with consumers upgrading to smartphones, there is an intimidation factor. Windows Phone is a light touch operating system," Rarick said. "It doesn't require a lot of maintenance. You don't have to download a ton of apps for a great social experience. It's a very intuitive experience from screen to screen."

Nokia unveiled its first Windows Phones -- the Lumia 710 and the Lumia 800 -- back in October, but said they wouldn't be available in the U.S. until 2012. Nokia has been heavily marketing the two devices in Europe.

Nokia is banking on its partnership with Microsoft – on whose operating system Nokia is now mostly dependent – to regain its former dominance in the mobile world. The success of the Nokia partnership is also critical for Microsoft as it looks to boost its smartphone market share beyond 5 percent and compete with the iPhone as well as Google's Android devices.

T-Mobile says it is targeting the nearly 150 million Americans who have yet to purchase their first smartphone.

The device is expected to be available at T-Mobile retail stores, select dealers and retailers nationwide, and online from T-Mobile starting Jan. 11. The Nokia Lumia 710 is expected to be priced at $49.99 after a $50 mail-in-rebate card if buyers sign a two-year service agreement.

The S2 is a lowrange device, with a 3.8-inch 800 x 480 TFT display, single-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm chip, and comes in two variants: a model with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, or a 512MB version with 8GB onboard. Both offer an 8-megapixel CMOS camera for taking stills or 720p video, and weigh in at 4.23 ounces. It runs Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, just like all the other smartphones announced by Lenovo.

Unfortunately for those looking to jump in with Google's latest and greatest, the K2 and the S2 will both be running a skinned version of Gingerbread, with no word on whether they'll be receiving the upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich. While there's no pricing or availability details on the K2 yet, the WCDMA version of the S2 is on sale starting today for RMB 2,990 ($468), with a TD-SCDMA variant to come in the near future.

The Lenovo LePhone S760 is lowend & seems to be a budget device. It has a 3.7 inch AMOLED display and comes with a 1 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM. Like its brothers, it runs Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread too, and is embellished (or disfigured, depending on how you look at it) with Lenovo’s custom UI. It will offer a 5 MP camera. As with the K2, there are no prices yet, but it’s expected to ship at the end of December.

But the Main and awesome features of the LG Nitro HD 4G is it's 1280 x 720 pixel True HD AH-IPS display with a 500 nit brightness rating.

The LG Nitro HD feels really light weight on hand & it's rear highly textured cover adds a little grip to the phone. The display of this phone is really a pleaseu to look at, being both bright and Sharp, but does manage to make the phone relatively large. Even if LG Nitro smartphone to be easier to hold than any other of the current large-display smartphone models on the market.

Better yet, the Nitro HD has true 4G LTE on AT&T, and though they don't have many markets covered, they've been expanding aggressively. In fact, New York City just got lit up with LTE on AT&T, and our home market (one of the first) has the Nitro downloads averaging 20Mbps and 9Mbps up. That's particularly heartwarming for those of us who want to use the mobile hotspot feature and turn the phone into a high speed wireless modem for 3G and 4G deprived tablets and laptops.

The phone is surprisingly light and fairly slim, with the 1770 mAh Lithium Ion battery contributing most of the smartphone's scant weight. In terms of speed, the Nitro feels zippy enough and it tears through 1080p high profile MPEG4 video, both to the display and to an HD TV using an MHL adapter (not included). The phone has 4 gigs of storage, with 1.86 gigs available and AT&T includes a 16 gig microSD card to make up for the paltry internal storage. The Nitro manages 2400 on the Quadrant benchmark.

The LG Nitro HD has excellent 8MP camera with automatic white balance seemed particularly impressive in the halogen lights. AT&T will offer the LG Nitro HD on December 4 for $249.99 with a new two-year agreement. Stay tuned for our full review to come in the near future.

After launch of Samsung Wave 525 and Wave 2, Samsung is coming with the next upcoming smartphone called Samsung Wave 3 in the Indian market.

The price of the Samsung Wave 3 S8600 mobile phone is Rs 19,600 and it will be available in the country by mid December. The Samsung Wave 3 is targeted at the mid-range price segment of the market and is already available in other countries of the world.

The Samsung Wave 3 mobile phone has a 1.4 GHz processor, 4inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display, runs on the Samasung bada 2.0 operating system (with improved TouchWiz user interface) and the internal memory of the device is 4GB which can be expanded an additional 32GB with the help of a microSD card.

The Samsung Wave 3 has a Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G and comes with a microUSB 2.0 port. It has a 5 mega pixel auto focus rear camera with LED flash that can also record high definition (HD) videos (720p) at 30 frames per second and a front facing VGA camera. Motorola Launches Motorola XT615 Smartphone in January 2012 in Indian Market

The Motorola Xt615 Android phone offers a unique proposition with a large 4 inch screen, Besides, it has 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS. This combination has been chosen so that price could be kept lower without compromising on feature list.

Every other aspect of the phone seems to be high-end except for the processor. Even RAM and ROM are 512 MB and 1 GB respectively and this we believe will afford the phone a decent performance.

There will be two colours - dark grey and white. The phone will be available in Taiwan starting December 15th. Given Motorola's budget credentials and past history, the device is expected to be launched in India by end of January or probably before that. Notably, Moto Razr came to India within a month of its international launch.

However for Motorola, the biggest challenge will be to price the phone right. In Taiwan currently it has been priced at an India rupee equivalent of Rs 18,600. However at that price it will be undercut by Samsung Galaxy S I9003, which has same screen size and bigger 1GHz processor, though only a 5 megapixel camera. And LG Optimus Black with a similar feature set as that of the Samsung Galaxy S I9003. Both the phones are selling at close to Rs 17,500 to Rs 18,000.

Vuclip: India's First Mobile Movie Portal

Mobile video service Vuclip has set up Starlight Cinema, a site where you can watch trailers, movie clips, short feature films, song reviews etc in various Indian languages.

And it’s not just for smart phones. Since the website does not stream the video, even users of low end feature phones that have basic 2.5G internet connectivity on the mobile can visit it to download the clips. This is unlike Jigsee, which offers an app for mobile videos for feature phones, and streams videos using algorithms for smooth playback.

Vuclip is hoping to cash in on the regional advertisement opportunity, by offering clips in a variety of Indian languages. Movies in 13 Indian languages such as Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Punjabi, Oriya, Rajasthani, Kashmiri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam will be available.

For Starlight Cinema, Vuclip has entered into content partnerships with UTV Motion Pictures, Reliance Entertainment, Vega, Whacked Out Media and MAA TV. The content served is a mix of old movies, recent blockbusters as well as upcoming ones such as Barfee, Agneepath, Rowdy Rathore and Ladies Vs. Ricky Bahl. There are also trailers of Hollywood movies such as The Adventures of Tintin, The Awakening, Hugo and Tresspass. The site has 9,000 clips from 350 movie titles in Indian regional languages.

In the pilot testing stage of Starlight Cinema, it recorded two million user visits and 11 million video views.

Salman Hussain, vice president – business development and managing director, India & Middle East, Vuclip, talks to Techcircle.in about the mobile video advertising market, the genesis of Starlight Cinema, ways to monetise it further and operational expansion plans.

What is the traction seen for mobile video in India over the past year?

If you look at when we started in January 2008 in India, the mobile internet growth story was yet to start and we have actually witnessed the growth story of mobile video. Just to give some metrics, in October 2010, we were doing 48 million videos per month. Now in a year’s time, we have crossed 100 million videos per month.

Globally, what is interesting about 5 billion videos we serve, is the growth rate. Since we started, the first billion was achieved in 34 months. The second billion was achieved in nine months and the third in three months. It’s been a hockey stick growth.

Has 3G helped boost traffic to Vuclip?

3G is still to take off. I would say that what it brought was awareness. Users think – I have a ton of bandwidth and what do I do with it. Here, video becomes a use case. Watching a video is an impulse, what we call “snacking”, to kill some time. So now users watch 2-3 mins of their favourite comedy scene or a movie clip.

This was the reason for launching Starlight Cinema. We keep a track of what videos are being viewed and we thought it would be a good amalgamation of content. That was the genesis of Starlight.

How are brands and advertisers innovating using the mobile video medium for reaching out to their target audience? Also can you compare it to online videos?

Advertisers started talking to us and asked us to create a video ad that entertains users but also subtly puts his brand there.

What’s most interesting for brands is their demographic. And what we have seen is mobile video on Vuclip has an audience of 14-18 years, 25-35 years and they are male. This is the target group for advertisers too.

Mobile ads for video have better retention rate than banner ads as videos are engaging.

Tell us more about the social sharing feature.

We have an off-deck site and have not done a ton of marketing, or TV ads, for that matter. We grew our user base because of the sharing aspect. If you like a video, you can share by SMS or to your friends on Facebook.

In India, Facebook / Twitter usage is minimal. SMS is big chunk of sharing here because people are used to the concept of forwarding text. It’s a natural fix for them. Around half of the 120 million views is via sharing.

How is Vuclip different from mobile TV companies like Apalya or start-ups like Jigsee that streams video clips?

We are not in mobile TV. Our primary mode of entertainment is 2-3 minute clips. And we don’t need an app. That’s a mental block, and a big put off. We leverage the handset capabilities and allow you to download the clips.

Around 34 per cent of our users are smartphone users. The majority is feature phone – say a Nokia 5233 and c101. They are the ones who contribute to traffic.

The advantage we had is we got in before the market grew and how to position ourselves. We have a huge target audience. We don’t have anyone doing videos at this scale. From an India perspective, we are the market leaders.

How is Starlight faring? What are your plans for it?

We have got two million eyeballs already and are doing a south Indian version next. We will segment it further. This is just version one and as traffic grows and as we engage with advertisers, we will change, localise, add more contextual advertising, sponsorships by brands, do viral videos and pre-roll advertising. We are reaching out to all top advertisers – FMCG, automotive majors.

Do you have any other monetisation plans for the site? What are your expectations from it in terms of a percentage of revenues?

We are looking at a couple of areas – advertising is obvious. These revenues will form a significant portion of revenues over the next 6-8 months.

What about subscription-based plans?

We are going to keep Starlight Cinema advertising-only and are not moving into the subscription play. There are other aspects of Vucclip like a freemium model that we can look at.

What are your operation expansion plans?

We have a small team of 18 people in India. They are spread all across – Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad. What’s key more than anything else is to be where customers are present. Regionalisation is important and our localising in state/circle. Vuclip is scalable and highly automated so we do not need to grow our employee base a lot.

We have also launched in South East Asia. Our focus is to grow out and launch new services like Starlight and video alerts and also evangelise business in new regions.

Samsung has launched its latest smartphone ‘Galaxy Note’ in India. The mobile phone was first unveiled during the IFA 2011 event in Berlin, Germany. We had earlier predicted the price of the device at around Rs. 35,000 and the actual number is very close to it. The Samsung Galaxy Note Price is Rs. 34,990. Let’s have a brief look at the specifications of the device.

The device comes with a mammoth display screen of 5.3 inch (the largest offered till now by Samsung) high definition super AMOLED multi-touch display screen (1280×800 pixel resolution) and it runs on the Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) operating system (which will be upgradable to Android Ice Cream Sandwich). AT&T Unveils HTC Vivid & Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket in US Market

Nokia Unveils First Windows Phone: Lumia 710 & Lumia 800

The world's largest cellphone maker Nokia unveiled its first phones using Microsoft software on Wednesday, hoping they will kick-start a rescue of its ailing smartphone business.

The Finnish group, struggling to keep up with nimbler rivals in a hotly contested industry, unveiled the lumia 710 and lumia 800 in London and priced them at 270 and 420 euros respectively excluding taxes and subsidies.

Crucially, the lumia 800 will include the full and free navigation service users crave.

The phones will be available in European and other markets around the world by the end of this year and in the United States in early 2012 and into mainland China in the first half of 2012.

Left in the dust by Apple and Google in the booming smartphone market, Nokia decided to ditch its aging Symbian platform in favour of Microsoft's software in a risky deal in February that spooked investors.

Nokia has not rushed with the new phones. Nimbler rivals HTC, Fujitsu and Samsung Electronics have beaten it with models using the latest Windows software, Mango.

Nokia and Microsoft have said they will focus on close co-operation with operators to support the platform.

"Operators really want to have another company on the scene: they don't want Google and Apple to rule the mobile universe," said Magnus Jern, chief executive of Barcelona-based mobile app development firm Golden Gekko, speaking ahead of the launch.

LUMIA HAS DARK BACKGROUND

Nokia's market value has halved since February as investors are unsure whether it can ever regain the market share it has lost.

Its third-quarter results beat low expectations, sparking hopes that the company can survive a painful revamp, but smartphone sales still dropped 38 percent from a year ago.

With Microsoft software, Nokia hopes to gain the kind of attention Apple and Google have attracted from software developers that enrich their devices.

Research firm Strategy Analytics expects Microsoft to double its share of the Western European smartphone market during 2012 to 12.3 percent, helped by the Nokia partnership.

The 12.3 percent forecast for Microsoft's software refers to its use across several mobile phone makers and compares with the much higher market share Nokia's Symbian platform alone previously enjoyed -- it controlled 41 percent of the West European market as recently as the first half of 2010.

With the Muve Music smartphone plan, Cricket Wireless customers will enjoy unlimited song downloads, ringtones, and ringback tones, as well as unlimited text, picture, and video messaging, 3G mobile data, mobile video, data back-up, and 411 assistance.

Muve Music is the first unlimited music service to be included as part of a wireless rate plan and now has more than 200,000 customers. By applying its philosophy of unlimited services and value innovation, Cricket and Muve Music have given their customers a new music experience that ranks high in customer satisfaction.

Cricket, a U.S. mobile operator that offers monthly plans without contracts, said the phone will be available on Sept. 25 in Best Buy locations across the country. The phone is being sold for a suggested retail price of US$130.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 Thinnest Smartphone Reviews

Another BlackBerry out of RIM? We might as well consider them done and finished. Or should we? With a brand new take on BlackBerry hardware and an improved and enhanced operating system in BlackBerry 7, RIM hasn’t been sitting still. I have been using a BlackBerry 9900 for over a week, and as a reformed BlackBerry addict, I have some thoughts on this latest flagship smartphone out of Waterloo. Is this the device that’s going to save RIM? Is this the phone that’s going to make iPhone and Android users switch to a BlackBerry? Can RIM finally compete in the smartphone arena? Will it take RIM 9 months to make a BlackBerry 9900 in white? Is Will.i.am going to haunt me for eternity? Hit the break to find out. (And I sure as heck hope not on those last two.)

Hardware / Display

RIM is no stranger to the hardware game, having been major smartphone vendor to really control the entire end-to-end hardware and software experience. Every BlackBerry release seems to show a constant trait — that RIM continues to improve its manufacturing capabilities — and the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is no exception. In fact, this is the finest hardware ever to come out of Waterloo (or Mexico, or Holland, or wherever your phone is made). From the beautiful black fascia to the stainless steel bezel surrounding the top notch components, to the soft-touch finished, carbon-fiber-laced back cover, this is a BlackBerry that exudes quality, and one that any executive would be proud to have grace his or her desk. The high quality materials RIM is using on the BlackBerry 9900 are apparent, I only wish the company would have made the switch sooner. It’s the first time metal has made an appearance instead of plastic, and it’s the first time I can remember a BlackBerry not feeling hollow, but feeling like a solid high-end product.

This is a BlackBerry that exudes quality.

Starting on the front of the device, you’ll see a pure white color accent scheme for the first time ever — even the send and end phone buttons are colorless, and it really works. While RIM isn’t a company that is known for focusing on design identity, or even obsessing over little details, the company makes the personality of the Bold 9900 come alive, and it meshes beautifully. Even the symbols on the keyboard aren’t a different color (they used to be red), but this new straight-forward color palette really works for me.

On the top of the phone you’ll find a screen lock/unlock button. On the right side there’s a volume up button up top, a mute key in the middle and a volume down button — all made out of metal, I might add. Below that you’ll find the camera shutter key. On the bottom of the phone you’ll see two charging contacts for compatibility with RIM’s charging docks, which not only makes a great alarm clock stand, but also reduce wear and tear on the microUSB port. It would have been great to see RIM take this one step further and use a similar technology for USB syncing as well, though it’s not that big of a deal. On the left of the Bold 9900 you’ll find a microUSB port, and 3.5mm headset jack.

Something I’d like to point out is that the thinness of the Bold 9900 is very competitive. At around 10mm thin, it’s impressive. For a device with a capacitive touch display, full size QWERTY keyboard — the best in the business — and technical specifications that bring the once stone-aged company into a near-competitive area, the Bold 9900 is an engineering feat, and one RIM should absolutely be proud of. Something RIM shouldn’t be proud of? The fact that the company didn’t include an autofocus camera in the Bold 9900. It would be comically funny if it weren’t a real sign of how RIM actually thinks — who needs an autofocus camera when we can make the phone thinner!

The display on the BlackBerry 9900 is excellent. It’s the first higher resolution device out of RIM, featuring a 640 x 480-pixel panel. While that’s not up there with Retina and qHD displays, the 2.8-inch touch screen on the Bold 9900 looks absolutely beautiful. It’s bright, it’s vivid, it’s crisp — this is an amazing display. Touch sensitivity and performance on the 9900 is also excellent, with touches being recognized immediately, swipes performing correctly, and flick and pinch gestures working properly in the web browser. It’s so good that it almost makes you forget that RIM is responsible for releasing the BlackBerry Storm. Almost.

RIM even went step further with outfitting all of its high-end devices with NFC capabilities, and even though the NFC functionality isn’t being used in the Bold 9900 at release, the engineering that went into the effort hasn’t gone unnoticed. The NFC chip is built into the battery cover with contacts that connect only when the cover it attached to the phone, and it’s just an ingenious integration; it makes you wonder why other manufacturers haven’t taken this approach.

Let’s just get this out of the way… the keyboard on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is the best physical keyboard on any smartphone, ever. I went there. It’s not just spacious, it’s tactile and it features the perfected RIM layout. It’s clickity, but not mushy, and it’s firm but not too firm. It’s also properly sized without being too big to type quickly — in short, it’s the best physical keyboard I have ever typed on as far as a mobile device goes. From currency symbols to exclamation points, the keyboard and keyboard layout on the BlackBerry 9900 is the best in the business. Even the backlighting on the keyboard is nothing short of glowing. Literally.

BlackBerry users will feel right at home, and it’s a refreshing change from the many terrible soft-keyboards out there. With that said, soft keyboards have an advantage in a couple of places, but if you’re a texter, a hardcore emailer or one of those old school individuals who just can’t make the switch to a touch-only smartphone, this is the best you’re going to get; and it’s really not even open to debate.

BlackBerry’s latest operating system, BlackBerry 7, isn’t a drastic change from the previous operating systems out of RIM. In fact, at the very basic level, it’s the same. Sure there are some different APIs and enhancements but at the end of the day this is, at the core, the same BlackBerry that you’ve been used to using.

That’s not to say RIM hasn’t made improvements in different areas of the operating system. In fact, sources close to me have touted the fact that RIM has been able to strip bloated code from the OS in various places, undoing years of bandaging and complexity — and it does show. Coupled with a reasonably fast 1.2GHz single-core processor, the software on the BlackBerry runs extremely fast. There aren’t many slow-downs, and the dreaded BlackBerry spinning clock hasn’t made very many appearances on my 9900s.

With that said, the app game on BlackBerry devices is nothing short of a joke. App World is a joke. Third-party applications are a joke. User interfaces are a joke. This is a phone still primarily based on what corporate users of the past once wanted: the best email device in the world coupled with pretty solid personal information management like contacts, calendar, tasks and more. Unfortunately, that’s not enough in this day and age to move the needle, and the dated software and operating system show.

While something like web browsing, now based on WebKit, has improved, it’s still a ways off from competitive offerings from Apple and Google. Photo and video manipulation still feels like a struggle on the BlackBerry Bold 9900, even with a 1.2GHz processor. Scrolling is faster than on any other BlackBerry smartphone, though there are still random slow-downs and hiccups, something hopefully fixed when the company finally transitions to its QNX-based OS in upcoming devices next year.

Voice calling on the Bold 9900 was a pretty solid experience. BlackBerry smartphones have been known for their superior RF performance and their ability to serve up solid connections, and the BlackBerry 9900 is no different. The device easily rivaled Apple’s latest smartphone and Google’s latest Nexus device in that department. As far as the ear speaker goes, however, calls sounded a bit shallow and lacked a low-end that is typically found on most top-tier smartphones.

The speakerphone on the BlackBerry 9900 is above average, though it also lacked the low-end response users look for in a high-end smartphone. Audio was even a bit choppy at times when using the speakerphone function, which was a pretty big disappointment. The sound just isn’t full, and the distortion compounds matters.

Playing back audio through the built-in speaker exhibited the same issues that the speakerphone did — the low-end was lacking, though mid and high-end performance was on point with other competitive devices. Max volume is also a bit lower than I was hoping, though the phone performed reasonably well with all things considered. After all, it’s not like it has Beats audio built in.

Battery life has been one of RIM’s strengths over the years, and that doesn’t change too much on the BlackBerry Bold 9900. While the battery is noticeably smaller than previous RIM devices (1,200 mAh compared to 1,500 mAh), and even though the processor speed has nearly been doubled, I haven’t noticed that much of a difference as far as battery performance is concerned. That’s pretty impressive considering some phones can’t last an entire day, and the BlackBerry Bold 9900 has been able to power through almost two full days of on and off usage in my testing; again, this is quite impressive when you take the faster processor and smaller build into account.

With constant emailing, moderate Facebook and Twitter usage, light web browsing and light voice calling, the BlackBerry 9900 chugged along for nearly three days — a ridiculous feat.

RIM’s BlackBerry Bold 9900 is the company’s best BlackBerry ever. It combines everything a BlackBerry user and fan used to beg for into one incredible package. A touchscreen with amazing full QWERTY keyboard, an incredibly thin and solid hardware shell with high-end finishes like a stainless steel bezel, meshed with a soft touch rubberized finished backside, complete with carbon fiber insert, make for an almost irresistible offering.

With an improved and enhanced operating system that is speedier than any previous version, this could be the total package you’re looking for in a smartphone. Unfortunately, it’s still a BlackBerry, and outside of the core areas where a BlackBerry still offers a competitive advantage like email, for instance, I don’t see a reason to pick this smartphone over an iPhone 4 or one of the latest Android handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S II or Google’s Nexus S. There will always be a market for the current incarnation of BlackBerry smartphones, but that market is shrinking daily and RIM’s QNX-based mobile devices can’t come soon enough.

T-Mobile USA HTC Sensation 4G Gingerbread 2.3.4 update Now Available

A new software update for the HTC Sensation 4G of T-Mobile USA is now available. New upgrade delivers software bug fixes, WiFi connection stability and user interface resolution improvements.

HTC Sensation 4G, or the US version for the global HTC Sensation finally receives its much-anticipated Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 software update.

According to T-Mobile’s note about the upgrade, the HTC Sensation 4G 2.3.4 operating system is bundled in the 1.45.531.1 software version that includes the following new features and improvements:

Last week, HTC updated the software of the HTC Sensation global, or the variant which was released in United Kingdom and other markets. HTC Sensation/4G is the first dual-core Android smartphone of the Taiwan-based Android smartphone manufacturer, first arrived in United Kingdom in May.

Under the hood, the HTC Sensation includes 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 768 MB of RAM, supports expandable storage via MicroSD. It can also shoot HD videos with an 8 megapixel rear camera and can initiate or receive calls with the front-facing VGA 0.3 megapixel camera. The T-Mobile variant named HTC Sensation 4G supports the carrier’s HSPA+ data connection.

Samsung Hercules & HTC Ruby: Price, Features, Specifications

T-Mobile USA will be launching two smartphones, Samsung Hercules and HTC Ruby on Oct. 26, according to a leaked document obtained by Tmo News. Hercules appears to be a variant of the Samsung Galaxy S 2, which has gained credibility and good reviews in other parts of the world.

Galaxy S 2 is expected to arrive in four versions -- on Verizon network as "Function"; Sprint network as "Within"; AT&T network as "Attain"; and T-Mobile network as "Hercules".

Samsung Hercules has emerged out of the blue and is expected to be T-Mobile’s flagship phone. On the other hand, HTC Ruby is considered to be a high-end superphone that appears to be of the same shape as HTC Wildfire with rounded corners.

Already T-Mobile has twelve HTC smartphones and five Samsung smartphones on its lineup, but both the new superphones -- Samsung Hercules and HTC Ruby -- will tap into the carrier's 4G HSPA+ network and will be the most feature-rich Google Inc.'s Android smartphones available.

Below are the expected features of HTC Ruby in comparison with the Samsung Hercules:

Display: HTC Ruby is expected to have a 4.3-inch display with a qHD 960×540 resolution providing a 16:9 aspect ratio that's optimum for widescreen video viewing. Hercules is expected to have a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED screen with 800x480 screen resolution.

The qHD is a display resolution of 960×540 pixels which is exactly one quarter of a full HD 1080p and three quarters of a 720p frame, in a 16:9 aspect ratio. This resolution began to become popular for high-end smartphone displays in early 2011. Though there are speculations that in the near future, the market might begin to see 720p HD screens in the 4-4.5-inch form factor giving an effective resolution of 1280x720.

Processor: Samsung Hercules will have blazing fast dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8060 processor with 1GB RAM. The HTC Ruby, on the other hand, is expected to have dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU with Adreno graphics and 1GB RAM. Even a tablet like HP TouchPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Apple Inc.'s iPad 2 have processors clocking in the range of 1 to 1.2 GHz.

Operating systems: Samsung Hercules runs the latest version of Google’s smartphone operating system, Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. It is still not known which Android is going to power HTC Ruby but rumors suggest Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS with new Sense UI 3.5.

Camera: HTC Ruby is expected to sport a rear-facing 8MP camera with 1080p video capture capability, and has an additional 2MP front-facing camera for video chat. It will also have a dedicated camera shutter button for quick access to taking photos and videos. The Hercules, when compared, sports a rear-facing 8MP LED camera with 1080p video capture capability, and has an additional front-facing camera for video chat.

Storage: Hercules boasts of 16 GB internal storage and via a microSD card slot it can expand up to 32 GB. It is expected that Ruby will boast a 16 GB internal storage apart from the 32 GB external microSD card slot.

NFC: Samsung Hercules and HTC Ruby are expected to support near field communication (NFC). NFC technology can transform the device into a convenient way for payment and device communication. NFC has potential to do more than just money transaction. The technology could offer features that allow multiple mobile devices to sync for speedier information exchange and gaming.

3G: Hercules will have category 24 HSDPA capability to exceed the max speeds of 42 Mbps downstream, which will make it the fastest HSDPA plus for a smartphone in the market. Today, HSDPA speeds found in most of the smartphones are 21 Mbps or 14 Mbps. Also, the phone is expected to have hidden radios for AT&T HSDPA plus as well, which is a unique feature. Hercules will also have MHL port which combines microUSB and HDMI port as one single port. On the other hand, Ruby is expected to have HSDPA 14 Mbps to 21 Mbps.

Input features: The input features that is expected to be found in Samsung Hercules are multi-touch input method, proximity, ambient light sensors, 3-axis gyroscope, magnetometer, and accelerometer. HTC Ruby, on the other hand, is predicted to have multi-touch input method, accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate, proximity sensor for auto turn-off, gyro sensor, and HTC Sense version 3.5 UI.

WLAN/Bluetooth/USB: The HTC Ruby will have Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot and microUSB version 2.0 along with Bluetooth version 3.0 with A2DP. Hercules, when compared, is expected to have Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA with Wi-Fi Direct and microUSB version 2.0 along with Bluetooth version 3.0 with A2DP.

Pricing: The Hercules is expected to be priced between $350 and $400, and an unlocked version is anticipated to be priced at $799.99. Ruby is also anticipated to be priced in the same range of $350 to $400.

Battery: Hercules is expected to come with a 1800 mAh battery, whereas it is not known about the battery capacity of HTC's smartphone. But Ruby is expected to come in Li-ion standard battery.

Samsung Galaxy S2 is currently the second thinnest dual-core smartphone in the world, surpassed only by the NEC Medias N-04C that will only be released in Japan. So it is expected that Samsung may target the coveted thinnest smartphone title.

Since its launch in November 2007, Android has not only dramatically increased consumer choice but also improved the entire mobile experience for users. Google's Bold Motorola Bet to Reshape Asian Phone Makers

SEOUL/TAIPEI (Reuters) - Asian handset makers using Google's Android operating system might turn to rival platforms such as Microsoft's Windows after Google upended the mobile landscape by buying Motorola Mobility Holdings for $12.5 billion.

Taiwan's HTC and Korea's Samsung Electronics have sold millions of mobile devices running on the free Android device, catapulting Google to the top slot in the booming global mobile software market.

But the acquisition of Motorola could turn Google from a partner to a competitor for more than 30 other Android-handset companies.

"The deal will make most Android players realize how dependent they are on Google and how quickly Google's plans can change their businesses," said Francisco Jeronimo, an analyst at research firm IDC.

Wall Street quickly anointed Microsoft a winner in the deal, with Windows potentially benefiting if the acquisition alienates the other phone makers that rely on Android.

Android held a 43.4 percent share of the smartphone market at the end of the second quarter, ahead of Nokia's 22 percent, according to data from research firm Gartner. Apple ranked third with 18 percent, the data showed.

BETS ON MOTOROLA TURNAROUND

Shares in Motorola's Asia's suppliers jumped on the deal.

Foxconn International Holdings Ltd, the world's top contract cellphone maker, which counts Motorola as a client, surged as much as 17 percent on prospects of more business from the new combination.

Shares of Compal Communications Inc and Arima Communications were among a slew of Motorola suppliers that hit the 7-percent daily limit in Taiwan.

"Everybody is betting on a Motorola turnaround. Motorola will get more help from Google to push its Android handsets with the deal," said Yuanta Securities analyst Bonnie Chang in Taipei. "Outsourcing companies such as Foxconn International and Compal Communications will benefit directly the most."

Shares in Samsung, which has businesses from chips to TVs and energy as well as phones, ended 6.1 percent higher in a broader market up 4.8 percent in post-holiday trade on Tuesday. Fellow Korean phone maker LG Electronics edged up 0.3 percent.

HTC closed up 3.1 percent in a Taiwan market down 0.3 percent.

ANDROID UMBRELLA

Some brokers said the Motorola deal could be Google's way to provide support to Android players.

Phone makers and software firms are involved in copy-cat lawsuits in the fierce battle over who owns patents used in mobile devices, with Apple going after Android device makers.

"We suspect that Google will now try to provide an umbrella for the Android community that provides IP protection from key rivals such as Apple and Microsoft. This is broadly how Microsoft protects Windows Phone," Nomura said in a note.

"We do not believe that Google will aim to continue to make handsets long term, but will rather look to spin the business out to an Android partner -- such as Huawei, LG, ZTE, for example."

Globally, HTC has been a standout winner after being the first to roll out a Android-backed smartphone, leaving it most exposed to any shift in the landscape, analysts said.

Nearly all of its smartphones run on Android but it also has a long-standing partnership with Microsoft.

"HTC and Samsung are companies Google can trust but not control to drive market share," Chang said. "If in the long run Google decides HTC and Samsung have very different business roadmaps, it may want to leverage on Motorola to gain market share."

HTC said in May it plans to bring out phones based on Microsoft's new Mango Windows phone software. However on Tuesday, HTC said the Google-Motorola deal would not affect its partnership with Google.

"This is a positive development to the Android ecosystem, which we believe is beneficial to HTC's promotion of Android phones," HTC said in a statement. "The partnership between HTC and Google remains strong and will not be affected by this acquisition."

Some of the fast-growing Chinese companies such as Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp are also betting on Android.

Huawei, known for its low-cost cellphones, is looking to replicate its telecom gear success in the smartphone market as it takes on the likes of Nokia, Apple and Samsung.

Samsung became the world's No.2 smartphone maker in the second quarter with a 19.2 percent market share. HTC is ranked fifth with 12.1 percent, according to Strategy Analytics. Apple is the top smartphone vendor.

The iPhone 5 launch sees Apple having surpassed Exxon-Mobil in stock market capitalization to become the largest company in the United States. This comes at a time when the tech giant's cash position is more than three quarters of the way to a hundred billion dollars, giving it both the kind of stock position to forcibly take over nearly any U.S. company it wants in a leveraged move, along with the kind of gold on-hand which would allow it to simply buy most other companies outright. And yet a cursory look at Apple's operations says that it's not in dire need of any particular acquisition. Its iPad dominates the tablet market without a hitch. Its iTunes Store runs the music industry without having had to acquire any of the record labels along the way. And while the iPhone is facing heavy competition from the Android platform, Android OS developer Google is one of the few companies which Apple couldn't realistically acquire. Yet there is one thing that's been holding the iPhone back from day one, and will continue to plague the iPhone 5 even as it eventually expands to every major carrier in every nation: it's the fact that most carriers just plain suck. Or at least they do in the U.S. And whether Apple wants to admit it or not, when it talks of "keeping the powder dry" by way of explaining why it doesn't use its ever-growing cash position for anything, what it's secretly eying is a way to offer its own in-house cellular network.

Forget about buying an existing carrier as a dedicated iPhone 5 offering, even if it could pull it together in time for the launch. Such a move would force Apple to become a provider for all of that carrier's other existing phone customers, or run them off, which would be messy. And forget about an Apple-branded virtual carrier; it would be subject to the same weaknesses as whichever carrier network it's a part of. What Apple must be looking at is building its own towers, stringing together its own network, and becoming an iPhone-exclusive carrier of its own. Apple learned the hard way that many or even most cellphone users are highly reluctant to leave their current carrier under any circumstances. Apple thought it could float the iPhone out there on just AT&T (and one designated carrier in each nation) and then use that exclusivity to whip said carrier into shape and force it to offer a more Apple-like experience. Not only did that not work, but customers of carriers like major AT&T rival Verizon, along with smaller carriers like T-Mobile and Sprint, rebelled by vowing to never buy an iPhone until it came to their carrier. Four years later, many or most of them have kept their word. As such, Apple has finally placed the iPhone on Verizon such that the iPhone 5 will co-launch on both major carriers, and while deals with Sprint and T-Mobile aren't spoken of, they can't be that far off. But even as Apple is placating those among the public who are married to their current carrier, Steve Jobs must be chomping at the bit to offer something better. Every bit of the iPhone 5 experience, from the sale in the Apple Store, to the hardware and software, to the iTunes integration, is an Apple-like experience. But then the carrier gets involved, and suddenly phone calls have dead spots, data networks have caps, customer service is a joke, and billing is a scam-like gotcha game. Suddenly, too many aspects of the iPhone experience are no better than what Android or BlackBerry is offering, and Apple loses part of the distinction upon which its reputation was built.

Apple's only way out of this is to build its own towers. Granted, the move would royally tick off all of the major carriers. But when you're larger than Exxon Mobil and all the other oil companies, its gives you a certain amount of leverage to work with. Apple would continue to sell the iPhone 5 through the existing carriers, but would offer an in-house carrier experience of its own which would be so superior that plenty of iPhone buyers would move to the Apple carrier the minute their existing contracts are up. But because so many among the public are conditioned to stick with their current carrier no matter what, there would still be plenty of iPhone 5 business left over for the carriers.

Such a move on Apple's part would serve to massively boost iPhone 5 market share as millions who've been on the fence about the iPhone would suddenly see the opportunity to be on an Apple-quality cell carrier as the breaking point. This includes those who have never owned a smartphone and are still using a basic cellphone, which in the U.S. at least, still quietly represents the majority of the population. And those among the "I'll never buy an iPhone because I don't want to have to move to _____ carrier" crowd would see the game reversed, as buying an iPhone would instead allow them to move to a superior carrier experience through Apple. It would lead to an immediate (or at least at end-of-contract) major shift in which existing Android and BlackBerry users would move to the iPhone 5 (or iPhone 6 by the time Apple finished building its network), allowing Apple to scoop up massive iPhone sales and profits which would offset the major cost of building such a network. And even if the network were a loss-leader for years before it paid for itself, it wouldn't matter. As Apple's cash position demonstrates, it can afford to make long any term investments it wants, so long as they even out eventually.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc Smartphone Launching in USA in August

Sony Ericsson will be launching its flagship XPERIA Arc Android smartphone in the U.S. market starting this August for $600 unlocked. Unfortunately, as the manufacturer wasn’t able to secure any carrier agreements, the device won’t be offered at this time with a contract for a discounted and subsidized price tag. As such, the $600 price point for this high-end handset may keep the device away from most people as the U.S. market is accustomed to subsidized pricing for cellular contracts.

Though Sony Ericsson didn’t mention what radios will be supported on the handset, it could be safe to assume that the GSM handset will work on either AT&T or T-Mobile USA. It’s unclear if Sony Ericsson will deliver two variants of the handset, each compatible with one carrier’s 3G bands.

RIM Unveils BlackBerry 7 Smartphones

Research in Motion will launch five new BlackBerry smartphones starting later this month in an attempt to rebound in the wireless market.

Two of the phones are part of the company's BlackBerry Bold line, as well as three revamped versions of the BlackBerry Torch.

The Bold 9900 and 9930 will feature a touchscreen display, traditional BlackBerry keyboard and built-in support for Near Field Communications (NFC), which could open the door for options such as mobile payments.

The BlackBerry Torch 9810 will feature a larger touch display and slide-out keyboard, while the 9850 and 9860 models sport slightly bigger screens powered by Liquid Graphics technology.

All five devices will run RIM's new BlackBerry 7 operating system, which will offer an improved browser, voice-activated searches and a host of personal and productivity apps.

Wireless carrier AT&T will launch the Torch 9860 in August, while the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Torch 9810 will debut later this year. All three smartphones will run on AT&T's 4G network.

The next wave of BlackBerrys represents RIM's latest attempt to reverse its downward turn in the smartphone market. Once the dominant device, the BlackBerry has quickly been overshadowed by Apple and its iPhone as well as the rising army of Google Android smartphones.

InMobi Acquires US-Based Ad Software Developer Sprout

Mobile ad network InMobi, the second largest after Google’s AdMob, has acquired the US-based ad software developer Sprout. However, the deal size and other relevant details are not available.

Sprout was launched in 2008 and is backed by Polaris Venture Partners. Its clients include noted companies like Chevrolet, Disney, Paramount Pictures, HTC, Sega and Nokia. The company has expertise in creating, building and distributing advertisements, based on HTML 5. The acquisition of Sprout brings with it rich media technology for ad creation and distribution on mobiles. InMobi will leverage Sprout’s technology edge to enable its clients (agencies, brands and publishers) to build and distribute rich media ads for devices that support HTML 5. However, Sprout will remain an independent company post-acquisition. Apple iPhone 4 launches in India on May 27

Apple's iPhone 4 hits store shelves in India on Friday, nearly a year after the next-generation version of the popular smartphone was rolled out worldwide.

Mobile phone carrier Aircel will launch the iPhone 4 on May 27 with a new pricing model, allowing customers to recover the upfront cost of the smartphone on select plans over 24 months, the company said in a press release.

Aircel will charge Rs 34,500 for iPhones with a 16 GB capacity and Rs 40,900 for the 32 GB model, it said.

Bharti Airtel , India's top mobile phone carrier, was also expected to launch the phone on Friday, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.

The iPhone 4 boasts a higher-quality screen and longer battery life than the previous model.

Bharti and Vodafone Essar already sell earlier models of the iPhone in India.

With more than 800 million mobile subscribers, India is the world's second-biggest market for mobile phone services and is also the fastest-growing. But smartphones are estimated to account for just over 5 percent of the mobile handset sales.

Indian carriers have recently started rolling out high-speed third-generation (3G) mobile networks, which is expected to boost sales of smartphones.

Nokia Launches Dual SIM Mobile Phones in Indian Market

Finnish handset maker Nokia would soon introduce "Dual Sim" enabled mobile phones in Indian market, a company official said today.

"We will be introducing the dual sim phone very soon (in India). The new model would be produced at the Chennai facility", Nokia India Director (Chennai-factory) Operations Prakash Katama told reporters here.

Meanwhile, Nokia after entering India in 2006, has crossed its 500th million mark mobile phone produced from the Chennai plant. The company which set up its first plant with an investment of USD 150 million began producing basic handsets.

"In June 2010, we crossed the 400 million mark and now we are proud to announce the 500th million mobile phone manufactured from our facility.", he said.

Stating that the company has so far made investments of USD 285 million at the factory as part of its expansion plans, he said they were very proud to cross the 500 million mark in a such a short duration, he said after unveiling the 500th million mobile phone Nokia - C3.

The company which initially began producing the basic 1100 model at the factory is currently manufactures 21 models including the QWERTY, dual sim and Touch models. "This has become the largest mobile manufacturing site for Nokia. We have about 8,000 employees at our facility with 70 per cent constituting women", he said.

While the handsets manufactured at the facility range from the basic to middle end phones (priced upto Rs 7,000), he said.

The phones produced in India have a localisation level of 30 per cent and the company has about five component suppliers in the SEZ itself, he said.

On the 500th mobile phone launched today, Nokia India Communications Director Poonam Kaul said their Brand Ambassador - Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan signed phone would be available for prospective buyers through an e-auction at www.nokia500million.com for bidding.

The winner would get the mobile phone personally signed by the Actor himself, she said.

Asked on their restructuring plans in which there could be about 300 job cuts in India, Katama later told PTI that 300 job cuts would be done in India by end of 2012. "It is likely to be minimal (in India)", he said.

About the proposal to manufacture a universal charger compatible to all mobile handsets, Nokia Communications Director Poonam Kaul said that proposal was "well on track". "We are absolutely on track with that..Thats very much on plan.. It will be introduced in 2012", she said.

Nokia currently has 10 manufacturing facilities in nine countries. From the Chennai facility alone, Nokia exports to over 100 countries which contribute 50 per cent of the production. In 2010, Nokia India reported revenues of Rs 25,000 crore.

Micromax Launches A70: Android Smartphone in May

Sony Ericsson's new Xperia family phones are now expected to be available mid-April. As per the listing at Flipkart.com, the new Sony Ericsson Xperia neo handset would be available in the second week of April at a pre-order price of Rs. 24,999. Yet another new Xperia handset with Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread, this new smartphone features 8 megapixel camera with LED Flash. Sony Ericsson is yet to launch Xperia neo formally with official pricing in India.

With slightly smaller display than the Xperia arc smartphone, the Xperia Neo has a 3.7-inch Reality Display with mobile BRAVINE Engine on it.

The new Xperia neo is one of the high-end Gingerbread smartphone announced by Sony Ericsson at the Mobile World Congress 2011. Xperia neo comes with 3.7-inch Reality Display that supports 854x480 pixel resolution and has mobile BRAVIA Engine for best clarity. This smartphone runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread under the Sony Ericsson's Timescape UI skin.

Under the chassis, Neo packs 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor and has 512MB RAM that will make Gingerbread perform smooth and play 720p HD videos too.

For imaging, Neo offers an 8 megapixel camera with Sony Exmor R image sensor and is capable of recording 720p HD videos at 30fps with continuous autofocus. The handset also has a front facing VGA camera for video calling and video chat. This handset has curvy top and bottom edges. It also offers built-in HDMI connector that will let you hook the phone with HD displays.

Priced at Rs. 24,999, Xperia Neo seems to be a good choice for the Android enthusiasts who are looking to spend at the max Rs. 25,000. As always, the price of this smartphone might come down in couple of months. Do note that this smartphone will have Android Gingerbread preloaded on it.

The wait for the new range of Sony Ericsson Xperia series smartphones running Android will come to an end next month. Flipkart, online retailer of books, movies, mobiles, cameras and computers has started taking pre-orders for the freshly announced Xperia arc smartphone. With a pre-order price of Rs. 28,999, which also includes sourcing fee, this phone is expected to release in the second week of April. Now don't take this as a Sony Ericsson India official date since we've observed that these dates usually tend to change. Sony Ericsson is yet to launch Xperia arc formally with official pricing in India.

Unveiled at the Consumer Electronic Show 2011, Sony Ericsson Xperia arc has a 4.2-inch Reality Display bearing capacitive touchscreen that supports 854x480 pixel resolution. Shatter proof sheet on the display saves it from scratches and the mobile BRAVIA Engine promises clearer visuals.

Samsung Champ Duos: Samsung Dual SIM Mobiles Launched in India

While the Galaxy Fit is already available and the Samsung I9003 Galaxy SL version is up for pre-orders, Samsung has launched two Dual-SIM mobile phones belonging to the Champ series, called the E2652 Duos and E2653W Duos. The W in the latter’s model name stands for the phone’s Wi-Fi capability.

It seems that there aren’t many new features that these two models can boast of. The operating system will be Java based with a TouchWiz Lite User Interface, so it’s quite evident that there’s no Android love. Probably at the same time, these mobile phones might be in the budget-level phones segment. Anyway let’s take a look at the specifications of both phones:

- 2.6-inch Resistive touchscreen

- Wi-Fi (in the E2652W model only)

- Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR

- 1.3 Megapixel camera

- 50 MB internal memory expandable up to 16 GB

- 3.5 mm audio jack

Samsung Galaxy S lcd I9003 Android Smartphone Launches India

Recently, Samsung launched the updated version of the popular Android smartphone, I9000 Galaxy S, abroad. Called the I9003 Galaxy SL, the new version has a Super Clear LCD, which has the same size (4.0-inch) and resolution (800 x 480) of the Super AMOLED display found on the Galaxy S. The Galaxy SL is also slightly thicker than the Galaxy S (10.6mm against 9.9mm) but has a bigger 1650mAh battery compared to 1500mAh battery on the S. The Galaxy SL, however, has a weaker PowerVR SGX530 graphics processor compared to the PowerVR SGX540 GPU on the Galaxy S. It comes with Android 2.2 Froyo pre-installed with Samsung's TouchWiz interface running on top.

The Galaxy SL will be re-branded as the Galaxy S for India and will come with 4GB internal memory instead of the 16GB memory available on the model sold abroad. The best thing about it, however, is the price. While the older Galaxy S was sold for Rs. 27,999 till it sold out, the new Galaxy S will be sold for just Rs. 19,499. Although you do get a slightly worse display, weaker graphics and lesser built-in memory, the price difference is substantial enough to make up for those things. And for the time the Galaxy S was on sale, it was undoubtedly the best Android phone in the market and now, with the new price it is an even greater value-for-money product.

Vodafone to Introduce 3G Services in India This Week

India's third largest telecom operator, Vodafone Essar will launch its third generation (3G) mobile services over the coming week. As a forerunner, the company recently launched its advertising campaign with its mascot Zoozoo during the cricket World Cup matches.

According to company officials, they will be launching their services in a phased roll-out this week onwards.

This will make Vodafone the third operator to launch full 3G services after Tata Teleservices and Reliance Communications. India's largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel has also launched services in some service areas, but launches have not been made official yet.

Vodafone tested its 3G services in December, but launches for most companies were delayed due to objections from the Department of Telecommunications over the security surveillance of services such as video calling.

For now, it rests to be seen if the cricket season will help Vodafone to deliver on the advertisement tagline, "Faster, Smarter, Better".

Android 2.3.3 now available for Nexus One, Nexus S

Nexus One users who have been waiting all this time to get in on the Gingerbread action will finally be relieved. Google is pushing the brand new 2.3.3 update to both the Nexus One as well as the Nexus S users simultaneously. As usual, the update won't be available to every Nexus users out there instantly, but you will soon see a notification on your phone asking you to update. So far we haven't had any luck with the Nexus One that we have with us but since we have waited all this time a few days more won't hurt.

I've never been a big fan of sequels. The very first version of something comes out and is so wonderfully brilliant that a second version is thought up to act as a cash cow. Or at least that's the way I feel about movie sequels.

But do phone sequels work the same way, or are they truly what they should be in the first place: improvements to the first piece of work?

The Motorola CLIQ was a run-of-the-mill Android 1.5 handset launched in late 2009 that didn't really make any ripples in the time-space-phone continuum besides being the primary vehicle to launch MOTOBLUR, a proprietary Motorola UI which gets mixed reviews depending on who you talk to (When it launched I looked at it as a pointless user interface that bogged down the phone's processing speeds in order to “enhance” your social networking experience).

But the landscape for Android is much different now. The CLIQ did well enough that a sequel was born, though current handset component standards are much higher. The average Android phone will typically have 800 MHz-1 GHz CPU with 512 MB RAM, 5 MP camera, HD video recording, and the list goes on; the original version barely even halfed those stats, and only in some categories. The point is, the CLIQ was obsolete within a matter of a couple months and the new version, the CLIQ 2, aims to appease T-Mobile customers who are looking for a good standard Android phone without having to pay too much.

So does this sequel improve upon the original in ways other than just higher specs? Read on to learn my take on the Motorola CLIQ 2 MB611 for T-Mobile.

Hardware and Software of the Moto CLIQ 2

The CLIQ 2 is a solid device that will definitely not feel too cheap in your hand. The 3.7” 480 x 854 pixel capacitive touchscreen makes it just the right width to feel comfortable holding for long periods of time, but the only concern will be the thickness and weight. Weighing 6.17 ounces does indeed make it heavier than the average phone. It also comes in at 14.5 mm thick, which is right about average for a smartphone with full keyboard attached.

The CLIQ 2 actually reminds me a lot of the HTC EVO Shift 4G in that it uses the same screen and takes advantage of a full physical QWERTY-style horizontal keyboard and adds weight. It does feel a slight bit bulkier than the Shift, but wasn't so bad that I was uncomfortable holding it up to my ear to make calls.

On the back, the battery cover has a few ridges built into it which allows for extra grippiness, always a must-have with phones in my opinion. I don't like the polished glossy plastic feel because it ends up being way too slippery for my taste. I don't mind the phone being a little less pretty just to ensure it survives without being dropped for a longer period of time.

Upon turning on the phone I am greeted with a request for MOTOBLUR logins. This version of MOTOBLUR has been improved over the last year and this is the same version you'll find in the Motorola Bravo, Droid Pro and Droid 2 Global. It overall is very close to the original, but among the enhancements that have been made, you get: improved business security and encryption capabilities, battery manager, more power over your social networking widgets (the ability to change widget sizes, add in photos, filter out what you don't want in your feeds, etc.), to name a few. The new version of Motoblur appears to do a better job at managing CPU resources so as to not cause the phone to become sluggish.

The CLIQ 2 runs on Android 2.2, better known as Froyo, so it will have better battery life, faster web browser and of course Flash 10.1 capability. Anyone looking to get an Android phone now should be looking at getting one with Froyo on it at the least, if not even better. There is simply no reason to choose a phone anymore that still runs on Android 2.1 or lower. Slower, less features, and has been technically obsolete for months. Not to mention there's no guarantee that your 2.1 phone will ever be upgraded in the future.

Under the hood you'll find a 1 GHz TI OMAP 3620 CPU unit with 512 MB RAM, a much-needed improvement over the original CLIQ's 528 MHz Qualcomm CPU with 256 MB RAM. The TI OMAP 3620 CPU is the same as you'll find in the Droid Pro and Droid 2, so look for comparable performance between this and those other devices.

Almost everything you see on the CLIQ 2 could be considered standard for a midrange Android. There really isn't anything I can think of that sticks out to me about the phone that differentiates it from any others — except for the unique keyboard design.

And I definitely mean unique, since something like this has not been attempted before. It looks like a cross between a beehive and the back of a turtle shell (a friend calls it the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle phone; I think it's too long a nickname to stick), what with its array of hexagon-shaped buttons that raise above the rest of the board. The keys are very well spaced and sufficiently raised. I think using the keyboard is pretty easy. What I don't like on the keyboard is that the keys are so stiff and pointy that it takes me longer to type on it.

I appreciate the added dedicated keys, like @, comma and period. The only dedicated keys I would also like to see included are the .com and messaging buttons; I can survive without them, but why make a smartphone that thrives primarily on emailing and web browsing without having these keys in mind?

Also handy to have on the CLIQ 2 is a dedicated toggle switch on the right hand side that switches the phone back and forth between ringtone mode and vibrate/silent mode, much like the iPhone toggle switch.

I lament the neglection of 4G on the Moto CLIQ 2. Sure, it's a midrange Android, and I assume it was left out because it was an added expense T-Mobile deemed unnecessary, but if you are advertising a new Android phone at CES alongside two other 4G phones being sold by your biggest competitors, it's probably a good idea to throw it in for good measure to keep it relevant. As it currently stands, the CLIQ 2 is capable of a theoretical max of 10.2 Mbps on regular HSDPA. It still ends up being faster than some competing 4G networks and much better than any other 3G network. The CLIQ 2 does offer a mobile hotspot so you can share that 3G connection with 5 other devices.

Notable Features of the Motorola CLIQ 2

Surfing through the programs that come preloaded on the CLIQ 2 was nothing exciting for me, as I didn't see anything offered that I haven't seen before several times on almost every single T-Mobile Android handset over the last 6 months. 3G Mobile Hotspot, Amazon MP3 downloads, Google Latitude, Blockbuster, DLNA, CarDock, QuickOffice, Telenav GPS and WiFi Calling are all normal included apps these days on T-Mobile. This isn't a bad thing, but I was expecting at least one or two bloatware apps that were completely new.

I also noticed that the CLIQ 2, being a Froyo Android device, has a nice built-in task manager that lets you kill selected apps and even tell certain apps to die as soon as your phone times out (or the screen locks). This is something that I wish was in every smartphone. It also uses a dedicated file manager and battery manager to help you stay organized and keep your battery from falling victim to the same blunders that has affected so many Android phones before the CLIQ 2 ever came around.

The CLIQ 2 also uses a 5 MP camera and HD video camcorder with 720p resolution. Here's one of the first things that came to my mind when I saw this: while the camera is the same, the camcorder is better than that of the Nexus S, currently considered a top-of-the-line device with fresh features.

Internally, the CLIQ 2 includes 1 GB memory and comes loaded with a 2 GB MicroSD card, though you can stick in your own memory chip (up to 32 GB) to load your own music, movies, and pictures.

The CLIQ 2 also comes with a FM radio, a feature overlooked by many but can be very important to anyone wanting to listen to the same overplayed songs again and again. You will, however, need to use your headphones to activate the radio. I've always been told it's the only way to activate the radio's antenna, but it's probably to keep everyone else from having to listen to your music too.

Performance of the Motorola CLIQ 2

Motorola has put its proprietary CrystalTalk Plus technology into the CLIQ 2. This is Motorola's patented noise cancellation tech that allows you to talk in a loud room at normal volume. With that, it gave me the ability to hear and be heard perfectly fine, either through the phone or through speakerphone.

Mentioned before, the 1 GHz CPU speeds coupled along with 512 MB RAM help keep the CLIQ 2 stay fast and fresh. Every app I tried to use in the phone loaded pretty fast with no sluggish behavior. The only sluggish part of the experience was when I would move my fingers up and down in the app tray and there was a slight delay waiting for the screen to catch up with me.

All in all, I'd say the CLIQ 2 is a great buy for a midrange Android handset. The call quality is good and loud, it has sufficient programs and specs to fit your needs well, and is pretty darn quick when looking for something. The keyboard is a hit and miss experience, and it all depends on how you feel once you get it broken in. At first impression those keys are stiff and too pointy to be able to type my normal speeds on. But I give them all the brownie points in the world for coming up with such a clever design, and look forward to seeing more unique designs down the road.

Nokia N9 to rock with 12-megapixel camera?

The rumor on the street is that Nokia will finally launch a seriously specced smartphone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It’s the N9 which is said to come with Intel-made 1.2GHz processor. From what I’ve understood, we could be talking about their Moorestown platform which is basically a smartphone system on a chip (SoC) with Atom core at its heart.

Moreover, the MeeGo powered device may also sport a 12-megapixel camera a la N8. Somehow that’s expected considering the N9 will be the Finnish company’s flagship smartphone for 2011.

Finally, LTE is also mentioned as an option, though not confirmed at the moment. The way I see it, having both an LTE and non-LTE version of the N9 makes perfect sense to get as many users as possible.

I don’t ask too much from the N9. All I want is E7-like device (with that awesome keyboard), a slightly faster CPU (MeeGo isn’t as optimized as Symbian) and a 4-inch WVGA display. That doesn’t sound too much, right?

Samsung Galaxy Ace to hit Mobile World Congress 2011

Product shots of the Samsung Galaxy Ace have leaked, seemingly confirming a name change for what was previously thought to be the Samsung Galaxy S Mini.

The handset will join the Samsung Galaxy range running Android 2.2 (Froyo), presumably at Mobile World Congress 2011 next month.

The Ace also goes by the product name Samsung S5830 and looks suspiciously like an iPhone 3GS.

The ace of spades

With an 800MHz Qualcomm processor, the handset promises to be small by today's standards but not particularly powerful.

With a 3.5-inch display, the Samsung Galaxy Ace also features Samsung's TouchWiz 3.0 user interface running over the Android OS.

Other goodies for the small-handed to look forward to include a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, a 2GB microSD card already installed, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, A-GPS and all that jazz.

We have very little doubt that we'll be seeing the Samsung Galaxy Ace get all official at Mobile World Congress 2011, with a UK release date soon to follow.

Samsung Galaxy S2 teases for 2011 Mobile World Congress

Samsung today gave out a teaser for the Galaxy S2 that confirmed it would show at Mobile World Congress. It gives no details of the phone itself but shows the current Galaxy S next to a cryptic image mentioning "evolution is fate." The February 13 unveiling in Barcelona directly alludes to a pre-show MWC introduction.

The S2 is expected to be an aggressive overhaul of the formula with a screen as large as 4.3 inches, at least a 1.2GHz processor and the clearer Super AMOLED Plus screen inherited from the Infuse 4G. A front camera, HSPA+ 3G access and Android 2.3 are also likely candidates. NFC wireless is a strong possibility but hasn't been confirmed so far.

If like the Galaxy S, the S2 would get a worldwide launch that would also involve the US.

As February’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona edges ever closer on our busy event calendar, we here at The Tech Herald won’t be in the least bit surprised as more and more smartphone spec lists are leaked to ye olde Internets. Look, here’s one now…

Glance up for a moment and meet the GT-S5830, which isn’t an iPhone 4 knock-off but the latest entrant to Samsung’s increasingly popular line of Galaxy devices.

Sniffed out by the industry truffle pigs over at MXPhone, the above smartphone is expected to carry version 2.2 of Google Android, the same 800MHz Qualcomm processor used in Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 Pro, a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen (480x320), the TouchWiz 3.0 interface with SWYPE, and a 5.0 mega-pixel camera.

Other contributing fixtures and fittings include HSDPA (7.2Mbps) EDGE/GPRS and Wi-Fi connectivity (b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1, A-GPS, 150MBs of internal storage, a bundled 2GB microSD card (with support for up to 32GBs), an FM radio with RDS, and a 1350 mAh battery.

The GT-S5830 is also likely to be known by various brand names depending on region, with monikers such as Cooper, Ace and Mini all currently being banded around.

No news yet on pricing or official launch dates, but we’re expecting to learn more directly from Samsung between February 14-17.

Nokia X7: Nokia Cancels US Launch of Nokia X7 Phone

In another setback for Nokia Corp., the Finnish mobile-phone giant has canceled the U.S. release of a smartphone that was slated to launch exclusively this year with AT&T Inc., people familiar with the situation said.

Nokia had intended to debut the touchscreen phone, dubbed the X7, in conjunction with AT&T ahead of the Mobile World Congress trade show next month in Barcelona, Spain, these people said.

The X7 would have been the first Nokia smartphone launched exclusively with a U.S. carrier since former Microsoft Corp. executive Stephen Elop took over as Nokia's CEO last September. The unexpected cancellation leaves Nokia further behind in its effort to correct a major strategic weakness—its poor showing in the lucrative U.S. market, where it lags Apple Inc., BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. and phones powered by Google Inc.'s Android software.

"In the U.S. market, the Nokia platform is at the back of the line behind all these other guys," says Roger Kay, president of tech consultancy Endpoint Technologies Associates Inc. "This is a very fast moving market. You don't want to be sitting around."

Nokia decided to pull the phone because it believed the X7 wasn't going to receive enough marketing and subsidies support from AT&T, said one person close to the company. Nokia still plans to launch the X7 in other markets, this person said.

In the U.S. market, phone companies typically subsidize much of the cost of a smartphone to keep the price down as long as a customer signs up for a two-year contract. Operators also help to pick winners by putting their marketing muscle behind certain devices.

The move leaves Nokia more reliant on its N8 smartphone. Nokia launched the N8 late last year without carrier support in the U.S., hindering its chances. Consumers can purchase the N8 from Nokia's website for $469, down from $549 when it launched. That compares with $199 for the cheapest iPhone and many Google-powered phones, though subscribers have to sign up for two-year contracts to get those prices.

While Nokia continues to stumble in the U.S., other handset makers are aggressively moving ahead with new smartphones. At the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. and HTC Corp. announced new smartphones that will be released in the U.S. in the beginning of 2011. Moreover, Verizon Wireless will begin selling the iPhone 4 in February.

Nokia, long the world's leading producer of mobile phones by number of units sold, is being hurt by its failure to produce a smartphone that can compete with the iPhone or models based on Google's Android software, as well as by its longtime focus on markets outside the U.S.

Nokia's Symbian operating system, which powers the X7, is seen as cumbersome and outdated. The company is building its new high-end smartphones around a platform called MeeGo, developed with Intel Corp., but that effort has been delayed as well. Mr. Elop said in the company's third-quarter conference call that Nokia would launch its first MeeGo device this year.

In the third quarter of 2010, Nokia was still the world's top maker of smartphones with 32.7% share, down from 38.3% a year earlier, according to researcher IDC. Apple, Samsung and HTC have been gaining share. Nokia isn't among the top five smartphone makers in the U.S.

"In the past, Nokia could afford to ignore the U.S. because there was so much growth in markets overseas," said Daniel Hays, a telecom consultant with the firm PRTM. "However, with the rise of the mobile internet in the U.S., Nokia can't afford to not be in the mix."

Nokia's smartphone strategy will be in focus when the company reports earnings Jan. 27. Mr. Elop has yet to detail his plans for the U.S market. On a conference call with investors in October, Mr. Elop said there was no reason Nokia can't succeed in North America, but did say it would require a change in strategy.

"I believe there is a degree of focus and execution necessary, along with different patterns of doing business that can drive success in that marketplace," Mr. Elop said.

5 New HTC Mobiles leaked Ahead of Mobile World Congress 2011

With Mobile World Congress just around the corner, it's time to brace ourselves for the usual tsunami of leaked handsets expected to make their way to the show floor in Barcelona.

First to break cover are HTCs latest phones, spotted over on PocketNow.

Five new handsets appear to be making an appearance at the conference. First is a seemingly flagship Desire HD lookalike, sporting a roughly 4 inch screen, curved bezel and front facing camera, with hardware buttons suggesting the Android OS is present.

This is followed by a 3.2 inch handset similar to the Nexus One, already seen in China under the A3380 guise.

A possible Smart 2 successor potentially packing BREW is also listed, with a massive 4.3 inch model with physical send and receive buttons spotted too, perhaps the same as the Chinese A3360.

Perhaps most interesting of all though is a completely button-less phone, only previously seen on a Verizon listing.

Not much more info than that at the moment, but we're sure we'll here more at the big mobile conference next month. Scroll down for the first few images of the handsets.

Sony Ericsson Working on Windows Phones for 2011?

Following-up on saying that they had an open mind about Windows Phone, rumour has it Sony Ericsson has one in the works for 2011. Google seems to have wooed pretty much every smartphone manufacturer (including Sony Ericsson) with the Android OS, but Microsoft has been equally successful at garnering initial interest for Windows Phone 7, if not any long-term commitments. SE has said that they were open to the possibility of working with Microsoft again, though they they were holding off on riding the initial wave, which strikes me as a good idea considering how LG has reacted to their results with the platform.

The current Xperia lineup, including the Arc and the upcoming Vivaz 2, Mini Pro, and Play, are all Android handsets, but the family started off with Windows Mobile, and should Sony Ericsson churn out a Windows phone at some point, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see it crammed in with the Android crowd. By the time Sony Ericsson hypothetically gets around to making one, I wonder if Microsoft will have enabled a deeper level of manufacturer customizations. Considering their joyride with TimeScape, customizing the experience seems high on Sony Ericsson’s priority list, and probably a prerequisite for getting seriously involved with Windows phone.

We still haven’t seen any hard and fast plans of such product, but now we know to prod SE about it at Mobile World Congress next month.

Photos of HTC Desire 2 Revealed ahead of Release Date?

A couple of weeks ago we talked about the iPhone 5 and iPad 2 about how they might lose their home buttons in the quest for smoothness. It seems that Apple isn’t the only brand chasing the button less Smartphone; if these images are accurate it would appear that the HTC Desire 2 will also lose front facing buttons.

An image on Pocketnow shows a HTC handset that they say is the HTC Desire 2, it features a front facing camera with curvy edges as well as a new look ear piece. A second image shows HTC and Verizon branding so if it is a hoax at least it’s a convincing one. The image appears to show that the device will have a 3.8 inch screen size, that’s almost Samsung Galaxy Ace territory.

It is rumoured that this Nexus One lookalike will be unveiled at the Mobile World congress event due to take place in February. If this is true then we might see this and a host of great new handsets at the same event. If only Apple would attend – Now that would be a treat.

One thing that is certain is that HTC loves the Desire line as much as their customers do as it is rumoured that Desire 2 will be the official name. For further details we will have to wait for an official unveiling.

A few official renders have made their way to the internet along with an official name for a handset we saw for the first time last week. Micromax has showcased its first Android run phone, the Andro A60 to the Indian markets. A full touch screen smartphone, the Andro A60 comes with the Android 2.1 Eclair update. The phone will start selling next month and will be available at a price of about 8,000.
Micromax is the third largest mobile phone maker in India and the latest Android phone from the company will further strengthen its hold in the Indian market. The Andro A60 has a 2.8 inch resistive screen with an auto focused 3.2 MP camera. The phone is powered by a 600MHz microprocessor.

Intex Technologies has come up with the Intex V.SHOW mobile phone, which features an in-built projector to combine projection with mobility. The phone allows users to project movies, pictures, music videos (saved in the phone and from Internet) and other Internet content up to 154.9 cms (61 inches) of screen/wall with a high intensity projection of 10 lumens and QWVGA resolution.
